The Torchwood Post of Toshiko Sato - Or Dude Where's My Representation!
Ok, I've seen posts floating around since Torchwood started about how the series treats minorities and then I started thinking about THIS article from AfterEllen.Com which at the time I didn't agree with but that I do now...I think - in some part. I mean the article is harsh, too harsh, but it has some good points.

I'll only be be looking at one minority, but you know...I'm going to rant and be deep and maybe even form some sort of argument in all this.

Anyway due to the length and the fact that I'll probably be drawing from spoilers and rumours it's under a cut:

Ok...so gay men get the best deal across all of the Whoniverse, Jack is testimony of that (I know Jack isn't gay, but he gets to flirt with men and that will do) not to mention there's an openly gay relationship in the form of Jack and Ianto. This is great, I'm not going to knock that, I'm really not because it's progress. But...umm...it seems that anything to do with gay women in Torchwood is nothing more than either a throw away scene or something to make the show more 'adult'.

I'll admit that yes, I'm biased, I'm a lesbian and I'm sorry but I feel I need some representation in UK sci-fi! I thought I had it in Tosh (to a certain degree) but this was dashed rather quickly. 'Greeks Bearing Gifts' resulted in a dead lesbian - such a cliché. Why do all lesbians in sci-fi/fantasy situations end up dead? Just looks at Tara in Buffy (I'm still in denial) and Thelma in Hex (ok...that was needed for the plat slightly, but the lesbian still ended up dead) so when Mary went hurtiling up to the sun so did all hopes of lesbian representation in Torchwood.

I held on to hopes that Tosh would maybe just look at women, but then when filiming was taking place (shooting for tonight's episode I may add) and she was with some guy all hopes died. Not to mention all the signs are showing that Tosh is going to end up with Owen - I may be tempted to boycot Torchwood all together because I hate him that much and part of the reason I hate him is because he was so mean to Tosh in series 1 and the reason I started liking Tosh was because I felt sorry for her due to the way Owen treated her.

It would be a nice thought that when Martha turns up in Torchwood that Tosh has feelings for her , but this is nothing more than fangirl femslash dreams - but! But! Here's the thing, Jack and Ianto are cannon and I feel it isn't fair! I mean come on, throw me a bone here! A girl can only do so many picture manips before she thinks 'god! this just isn't fair!'I want more than my fandom, I really do.

Is this all I'm getting? Two alien enduced kisses but lots of Jack/Ianto moments - including kisses (I honestly don't mind 'cos it is sweet), but that's my lot? I mean don't even get me started on Doctor Who, but I should get something a little more out of Torchwood?

Lesbians in Torchwood's first series were nothing more than something to make it 'adult' in series 2 they're nothing more than a distant memory of what could have been.

I do agree, it does seem that way. IMO in TV lesbians are not represented as much as gay men. The only show IMO that did a good job of it was Buffy (I still miss Tara). It had three season of with a lesbian relationship (I'm counting the friendship days too because they were smitten with each other then, Willow just didn't know it because she hadn't found her sexuality yet.)

With Tosh I was hoping they would go that root with her as well after Mary but it seems they have still in love with Owen. I'm hoping this season she will get over Owen. I don't think they will end up together, I just don't think Owen will ever return her feeling. Tosh seems to have the trouble of falling for people she can't be with, like Mary (because she was bad guy), Owen and it seems from the trailer this solider. It feels like they push Tosh so far back in most episodes that we won't get storyline I'm hoping for; Tosh finding her sexuality. They touched every so lighty on what her parents reactions would be.

We get to see Gwen's relationship with Rhy, Owen and hints of Jack. Jack with Ianto, real Jack Harkness, other. Owen has Gwen and Daina(sp)and I'm thinking maybe one sided for Martha. Tosh is background in love with Owen, getting her heart broken over and over. Gwen was right, being in love looked good on Tosh.

I'm rambing but you get my point. I agree with what your saying about Tosh.

btw I love your icon

Thank you, I'm glad that what I put made sense, I tend to babble incoherently when I get started.

I think Tosh, in general gets the short end of the stick in Torchwood. I would enjoy seeing Tosh...I don't want to say finding her sexuality, as I think bisexual is a legitimate sexuality, but coming to terms with it, and exploring a relationship with a non-alien woman. That being said for that to happen, it would have to be extremely well done, so that Tosh isn't the token lesbian as well as the token minority (which may not actually be true in the sense of the producers saying "we need a minority in the show", but the way that her character has been marginalised, and the fact that she is rather stereotypical [in the tech-savvy Asian way], I can't help but wonder...or feel that way, especially being a minority myself).

It would be a nice thought that when Martha turns up in Torchwood that Tosh has feelings for her , but this is nothing more than fangirl femslash dreams

I'd love to see at least flirtation between the two in canon and if Tosh/Martha fic does not come out of Martha showing up, I will be extremely disappointed.

I do like the show on the whole, but I have a lot of issues with how the woman are portrayed on it, I think [eta: and sexuality. I see Jack as polyamorous, and that's not really touched on at all...but I digress] But, perhaps that is a rant for another day.

YES. And yes again.

I can't think of anything coherent to add, but after tonight's ep I would be happy for Tosh to have *any* happy relationship. And give us some lesbian people, not just lesbian smut.

I agree in some respects, and I want some more girl lovin', but we've already got more than most mainstream TV shows give so it's a start.

Also, the thing with Tara has always confused me; did people think they'd get a happy ending? When Buffy was full of completely broken relationships? Look at Buffy and Angel, Buffy and Riley, Xander and Anya, Willow and Oz, Giles and Jenny... no relationship worked on that show.

Ok...good point about all the relationships on Buffy, nobody was happy. But you know...I guess Willow and Tara had so much heartache in the 6th season that the shooting was just...overkill (ok, that's probably the worse word to use ever)

I've often thought of this and wished that there were more woman/woman relationships in TW. I'm of the opinion that Tosh is a slightly repressed bisexual - in theory she's open to relationships with people regardless of gender, but in practice she still has some barriers to that. I have to say that I wasn't fond of Tosh/Mary - I hate hate hated the fact that the only lesbian relationship was abusive and manipulative. Before I saw GBG I was hoping for something much more real and fleshed out - I didn't expect it to last past that episode but I wanted to see something kind of sweet and tender. A bit like what Tosh has with Tommy would have been nice, really.

I'm kind of disappointed about the Owen thing because he's treated her like shit, and I was also sorta hoping for Tosh to fall for a woman this season. Like you I don't hold out much hope for Tosh/Martha canon, but I'm curious to see if the ambiguous sexuality of the show will show up at all in Martha.

*sigh*

Last night I pondered the fact that Torchwood would be on more even footing with respect to lesbian relationships if we had a female version of Captain Jack. And then I think my brain broke.
